Dearest Novem,

I will never marry him. Now that you are gone, my only cause is to be with you again forever. Wait for me. Stay alive. I love you.
Yours Always,
Esamne

Novem pressed his lips against the words, inhaling the still clinging scent of her. From that day forward, he kept the letter under his shirt and against his heart.
Chapter Ten
Another unsuccessful day in Hicares had Farek Malphesent on edge. He stormed toward his room in the Hicaron palace. It had once belonged to King Simnaud, before heâd fallen in battle at The Land Bridge. King Simnaud wouldnât recognize it now. It had always been a Spartan and tidy room, as he didnât believe in holding on to anything unnecessary. Farek had piles of books and tomes everywhere. Heâd spent plenty of sleepless nights trying to figure out how to unlock the power within the Statue of the Goddess Winds. Nothing had panned out.
To make matters worse, he hadnât received a letter in months from the spy who had been relaying messages from his assistant Brence in Pescel. The manâs sole purpose had been to gain enough trust from the Pecu cultists there to obtain access to their Great Library. Surely, they had the answers to this statue there. Brence had seemed so loyal that Farek could only assume the worst. Somehow, the cultists discovered what Brence was really up to and punished him for it.
Farek sat at his dresser. He stared at himself in the mirror. Farek had never cared about his looks until he met Esamne. She was so beautiful, he made an effort to be just as attractive now. Where Esamne was sunshine, Farek was moonlight. Thatâs how he knew they were perfect for each other. They were such complementary opposites. She was innocent and he was shrewd. She was sweet and he was sour. She believed the best in everyone and he believed the worst.
When he had become her tutor all those years ago, it had been an incredible stroke of fortune for Farekâs impoverished family. Finally, his countless years of study would be more than a burden on his parents. Teaching the princess would mean they would be taken care of for life. Then, he met his student. She couldnât have been more than sixteen years old. She was honestly too young for him to have turned his head so immediately, yet he had a smitten heart from the beginning. She was everything he had ever wanted in his life.
The day she told him she felt the same had been the happiest of his life. He still felt her strawberry lips on his. He felt the satin sheets under their bodies. It had been years now. He knew once he proved that he was more than a tutor or a regent, once he had real power of his own, she would come back and no one would question their love or their marriage.
Looking at himself in the mirror now, he hoped his power came before his looks left.
